Welcome

The aim of ULTRAS is to study the interaction of matter with radiation with extreme time resolution (few optical cycle pulses) and/or high peak power (multiterawatt pulses), for a variety of applications in gas and solid state physics, plasma physics, surface science and photobiology.

ULTRAS has earned a wide recognition and leadership in the field of ultrafast phenomena from the generation of ultrashort pulses to the development of a number of related ultrafast spectroscopic techniques and combines unique expertise in different research areas. The ability to excite molecules, solids and thin films with extremely short light pulses from near near-infrared to visible permits the study of relaxation or energy transfer processes that would otherwise not be observable. Expertise in time-resolved measurement techniques in the field of biomedical optics, has led to state of the art instrumentation for non-invasive optical characterisation of biological tissues.

ULTRAS is one of the leading laboratory in laser produced ultrashort soft X-ray pulses and in attosecond physics, which are topics at forefront of research nowadays. Such pulses allow tracing motion of nuclei in phenomena including phase transition in solids, formation and breaking of chemical bonds as well as of electrons in inner shell transitions in atoms and in ionization phenomena. In the field of X-UV optics and high intensity laser-matter interaction ULTRAS relies on the collaboration with University of Padova and LUXOR Regional Laboratory.

ULTRAS is part of the facility “Centre for Ultrafast Science and Biomedical Optics” (CUSBO), established at the Department of Physics (Politecnico of Milan) and open to europen users within the European Union program of “Access to large scale infrastructures”. ULTRAS provides advanced training in the experimental research at the forefront of modern science in an international environment.

ULTRAS belongs to the National Institute for Physics of Matter (INFM) and it is located at the Department of Physics of Politecnico in Milan.
