ABSTRACT
Van der Waals (vdW) materials, such as the family of Transition Metal Dichalcogenides (TMDs) semiconductors, are an exceptional system to investigate light-matter interaction at the nanoscale, exhibiting appealing optical properties in their monolayer form, such as tightly bound excitons, light–valley degrees of freedom and single-photon emitters. Furthermore, bulk TMD crystals exhibit large refractive index (n>4) and large optical anisotropy, making them a favourable candidate for the realization of low-loss optical resonances in all-dielectric nanophotonic structures. In this talk, I will discuss how nanophotonic structures, made exclusively of vdW materials, open to a plethora of possibilities for controlling light at the nanoscale, from single nanoantennas for unidirectional emission, to high quality factor metasurfaces empowered by photonic bound states in the continuum.
