"Nonlinear nanophotonics with two-dimensional materials and near-zero index media"

ABSTRACT

 

This seminar will focus on novel nonlinear optical applications enabled by 2d materials and near-zeroindex media. The role of graphene surface plasmons in the enhancement of high harmonic generation and quenching of saturable absorption will be discussed in connection with novel laser designs such as cavity-free graphene-based random lasers. The second order nonlinearity of monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides will be shown to provide enhanced even harmonic generation and parametric down-conversion in photonic micro-cavities, with potential applications in micron-sized parametric oscillators and integrated sources of entangled photons. Finally, the potential of near-zero-index materials for enhancing nonlinearity thanks to the highly reduced group velocity in such media will be discussed in connection with harmonic generation, optical modulation, and the realization of all-optical nonlinear metasurfaces.
