The International Commission for Optics (ICO) is an international scientific society founded in 1947 as an affiliated commission of IUPAP. Its first meeting was held July 12-17, 1948, in Delft, the Netherlands, with 44 delegates from 11 countries attending. The ICO is now a full member of the International Science Council (ISC) with 60 members, including 53 territorial committees and 7 international organizations in the field of optics and photonics.
The governing body of the ICO is the General Assembly, which meets every three years. The Bureau handles day-to-day activities and includes the President, Past-President, Secretary General, Associate Secretary, Treasurer, and 15 Vice Presidents (at least two from industry).
The ICO maintains contact with optical scientists from around the world and coordinates international activities, such as scientific meetings. It has established an Education Committee and participates in international meetings such as Education and Training in Optics and Photonics. In addition, it has established a Regional Optics Development Committee, working with ICTP to support researchers in developing countries, particularly through optics summer schools, primarily supporting research and development.
