LabXAS: Developing a new table-top XAS/EXAFS instrument for in-house research

X-Ray Absorption spectroscopy (XAS) - and in particular Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) - are powerful synchrotron techniques used to characterize materials, which can give Information on the present atomic species, their oxidation state and their electronic configuration. However, performing XAS experiments outside synchrotron facilities has been always extremely challenging due to the much lower brilliance. Thanks to the technology development of the new available compact lab X-ray sources, we aim to overcome this limitation. Within the frame of the NeXT-GAME and PNRR MUSA projects, the POLIMIX group has designed in collaboration with Cinel.srl (a top-level company in the field of X-ray and vacuum technology) a new table-top XAS spectrometer for studies on new materials, next generation batteries, catalysis and biochemistry. The candidate master degree student, followed by the POLIMIX people, will participate in the instrument assembling and commissioning as well as the writing of the control software.
