Ferragut Rafael Omar

Associate Professor

Rafael Omar Ferragut is Associate Professor of Experimental Physics at Politecnico di Milano and coordinates the Positron Laboratory/VEPAS at L-NESS in Como. His research uses positrons and positronium in two complementary ways: as quantum probes of defects, interfaces, and electronic states in functional materials, and as systems for fundamental studies of antimatter. His activities in materials physics focus on lithium-ion battery cathodes and buried interfaces, perovskite solar cells, semiconductors, thin films, porous materials, and emerging biomedical applications of positron annihilation spectroscopy. He leads the Politecnico di Milano activities within the ASACUSA collaboration at CERN, co-leads research within QUPLAS on positron and positronium interferometry and gravitational measurements, and contributes to the Einstein Telescope collaboration for the development of a third-generation gravitational-wave observatory. His laboratory operates a slow-positron beam, a positron annihilation lifetime spectrometer, and a coincidence Doppler broadening spectrometer, combining experiments with first-principles calculations and measurements at international positron facilities. Recent achievements include the first demonstration of antimatter wave interferometry and orbital-sensitive studies of electron transfer at battery-cathode interfaces.
